What Does Freelance Editing Look Like?
While my degree was concentrated in fantasy and mythology, I did take all the traditional linguistics and English classes required for all students under that umbrella. I can edit many genres, but it's always important to know what a freelance editor specializes in.
Starting with the Final Edit section, pricing is fairly straightforward. This would work well for someone who isn't interested in additional feedback, plot integrity, research, etc., and just wants grammatical errors and typos corrected. Reasons prices could go up would include any additional back-and-forth between editing and client, checking work for plagiarism, making sure links to cited sources are working and correct, and other similar things.
General editing and feedback dive a little deeper by addressing repetitive language, confusing language (this could be because of point of view integrity, too many typos, or tense issues) Things that don't make sense or need a different/added description. It includes the elements in the first column combined with the new ones. As it includes needed correspondence and extra time, it can lean towards the higher price depending on how much it goes back and forth.
Significant editing and feedback are very similar to the previous column but would include rewrites needed by the client and consultation on the quality of work as well as plot-hole awareness and research into the audience. Fantasy readers, in particular, tend to be very picky and look for inconsistencies as well as accuracy within the lore. This could also include SciFi in terms of needing accurate facts. The feedback is really that fine-tooth comb you see in the details and clear vision that comes with a successful novel.
